About

About Mathsoc: The Dublin University Mathematical Society was formed in 1923 by a group of students including Ireland's only Nobel Prizewinner in Physics, Ernest Walton. The purpose of the Society then and now was to provide events of mathematical interest for its members.

What we do: The modern Mathsoc hosts events weekly. These range from talks - by Trinity lecturers, international speakers and students - to events of a more social nature (such as our annual Christmas party). We bring our invited speakers to Commons, Trinity's traditional evening meal, before their talks, and hold a reception afterwards. The Society's talks provide an excellent way for students to hear about interesting mathematics they would not normally encounter, as well as to get know people from other years and classes in college. We have been fortunate enough to be visited recently by the likes of Nobel Laureate Gerardus 't Hooft, and Professor Gang Tian of Princeton University.

IVs and IMSA: As well as running events, we also send a team to the Irish Mathematical Intervarsities, an annual mathematics competition between Ireland's universities. We emerged as winners in last year's contest, and as a result qualified to send a team to the International Mathematics Competition in Bulgaria, where we achieved one bronze medal and three honourable mentions. We are also due to be hosting the next Irish Mathematical Student's Association conference, probably in February next year.

Room and library: The Society has a room in the School of Maths which provides a haven for tired students, as well as containing our rather impressive library.

To find the room, go up the stairs into the School of Maths, turn right, keep walking down the corridor through a door, past some stairs, next door on right. Here's a very poor quality map:

Fashionable attire: A Mathsoc hoodie is an excellent addition to anybody's wardrobe:

You'll notice how the most stylish and desirable person in the picture is the one in the Mathsoc hoodie - this is not a coincidence (actually Josh is in this photo, so that's a lie). New hoodies will hopefully be ordered sometime this year, so start saving now. As good as plumage!
